The epidermis is present on the outer surface of the entire plant body. The cells of the epidermal tissue form a continuous layer without any intercellular space. It performs the following important functions:

  1. It is a protective tissue of the plant body.
  2. It protects the plant from mechanical injury, parasites and cold or heat.
  3. It allows the exchange of gases through stomata.
  4. Greatly increasing the absorptive surface areas for the absorption of water and nutrients.
