What is the role of epidermis in plants?
Solution
The epidermis is present on the outer surface of the entire plant body. The cells of the epidermal tissue form a continuous layer without any intercellular space. It performs the following important functions:
- It is a protective tissue of the plant body.
- It protects the plant from mechanical injury, parasites and cold or heat.
- It allows the exchange of gases through stomata.
- Greatly increasing the absorptive surface areas for the absorption of water and nutrients.
