Question

Why did the Constitution adopt a federal system for India?

Answer in Brief

Solution

India has adopted a federal form of government in which a strong national government is at the centre, and powers are distributed to the state and local governments.

The Constitution makers went ahead with federalism because of India's large size and diversity. India shares a rich religious, cultural, regional and linguistic heritage marked by differences and unique characteristics. It would have been impossible to govern this multiculturalism by complete centralization, as it would have led to the breakdown of the union. That is why India adopted a federal system.
