Question

Why does sharp glass edge become smooth on heating it upto its melting point in a flame? Explain which property of liquids is responsible for this phenomenon.

Long Answer

Solution

When the sharp glass edge is heated upto its melting point in a flame, it gets melted and becomes rounded at the edge which makes it smooth. The sharp edge becomes round on melting due to the surface tension phenomenon to acquire minimum surface area.
