Question
Without solving the quadratic equation 6x2 – x – 2=0, find whether x = 2/3 is a solution of this equation or not.
Solution
Consider the equation, 6x2 - x - 2=0
Put `x = 2/3` in LHS
LHS = `6(2/3)^2 - (2/3) - 2`
`= 24/9 - 2/3- 2`
`= (24 - 6 - 18)/9 = 0 = "RHS"`
Since LHS = RHS, Then `x = 2/3` is a solution of the given equation
