Question
Write the chemical formula of washing soda. How can it be obtained from baking soda? List two industries in which washing soda is used for other purposes than washing clothes.
Solution
Chemical formula of washing soda is `"Na"_2"CO"_3` .
When baking soda is heated, sodium carbonate, water and `"CO"_2` are produced.
Sodium carbonate obtained is dissoved in water and crystals of washing soda are obtained by crystallization.
\[\ce{2NaHCO3 ->[\Delta] Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2}\]
Uses of washing soda:
(i) It acts as water softner.
(ii) Sodium carbonate covers and kills spores.
(iii) It can also be used in textile and petroleum refining.
