Question

Write structures of different isomers corresponding to the molecular formula C3H9N. Write the IUPAC names of the isomers which will liberate nitrogen gas on treatment with nitrous acid.

Chemical Equations/Structures

Solution

The molecular formula C3H9N represents four isomers of aliphatic amines. This is as follows:

Primary amines:

(i) CHA3CHA2CHA2NHA2Propan-1-amine

(ii) CHA3CHCHA3|....NHA2Propan-2-amine

Secondary amine:

(iii) CHA3NHCA2HA5NMethylethanamine

Tertiary amine:

(iv) ...CHA3|CHA3NCHA3N,NDimethylmethanarnine

Only primary amines react with HNO2 to liberate N2 gas.

CHA3CHA2CHA2NHA2Propan-1-amine+HNOA2CHA3CHA2CHA2OHPropan-1-ol(major product)+HA2O+NA2

.CHA3.......................CHA3...................................................................................CHNHA2Propan-2-amine+HNOA2CHOHPropan-2-ol(major product)+HA2O+NA2/........................../...........................CHA3.......................CHA3..............................
