Advantages of Friction are:
- Due to friction, the object can be placed at position and shape.
- Frictional force helps to move the object. It helps in running, walking and jumping.
- Frictional force helps to move the object with high speed. For Example: Spikes are used by athletes to run fast, studs are used in soccer.
- With the help of friction, the ridges of the skin of our fingers and our palm enable us to grab and hold the object. For Example: In badminton, the players use grip to hold the racket.
- The energy lost due to friction in trying to move the object is turned into heat energy.
Disadvantages of Friction are:
- The objects incur wear and tear as a result of friction. To make the part move easily and to stop wear and tear, lubrication is utilised.
- Friction makes it more difficult when one has to move the object. Friction makes it difficult to slide a box across the floor.
- In roller skating, rolling shoes and smooth surface are used to minimize friction.
- Excess of friction means extra energy thus energy is wasted.
