उत्तर

Esterification Saponification
1. It is a reaction in which carboxylic acids react with alcohols in the presence of conc. H2SO4  It is a reaction in which an ester reacts with an alkali.

2. The formation of a fruity smell compound takes place called an ester. The formation of soap takes place.

3. It needs a catalyst for a reaction to occur. No catalyst is required for the reaction to take place.

4. The chemical equation involved is:

\[\ce{CH3COOH + C2H5OH ->[conc. H2SO4]CH3COOC2H5 + H2O}\]

The chemical equation involved is:

\[\ce{CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH -> CH3COONa + C2H5OH}\]

(A) the red litmus paper turns colourless and there is no change in the blue litmus paper.
(B) the red litmus paper turns blue and the blue litmus paper turns red.
(C) there is no change in the red litmus paper and the blue litmus paper turns red.

An alcohol containing two carbon atoms.

Raina while doing certain reactions observed that heating of substance ‘X’ with a vinegar-like smell with a substance ‘Y’ (which is used as an industrial solvent.) in the presence of conc. Sulphuric acid in a water bath gives a sweet-smelling liquid ‘Z’ having molecular formula C4H8O2. When heated with caustic soda (NaOH), ‘Z’ gives back the sodium salt and the compound ‘Y’.

Identify ‘X’, ‘Y’, and ‘Z’. Illustrate the changes with the help of suitable chemical equations.
