  • The ovum, also called the egg cell, is round, and the nucleus is in the middle. The ovary has a layer of cells around it called the follicle. Figure (a) in the picture shows the ovum.
  • It is called a morula when it has 8 to 16 blastomeres. The morula is shown in Figure (e). It keeps dividing and becomes a blastocyst as it goes deeper into the uterus.
  • The blastomeres are organised in the blastocyst into two layers: the trophoblast, which is on the outside, and the inner cell mass, which comprises cells connected to the trophoblast. Figure (g) in the picture shows the morula.
