प्रश्न

What are the limitations of J.J. Thomson’s model of the atom?

लघु उत्तरीय

उत्तर

The limitations of Thomson's model are described below:

  1. Thomson's concept of an atom believes an atom to be a sphere with a uniform positive charge. Later studies, particularly Rutherford's α-particle scattering experiment, demonstrated that an atom contains a positively charged 'core' at its centre.
  2. Thomson's atomic model assumes that an atom's mass is equally distributed. Rutherford's experiment demonstrated that an atom's mass is localized into its core.
