प्रश्न
Why is the Human Genome project called a mega project?
उत्तर
The Human Genome Project is a very large-scale project under which all the genes present in the human genome are identified. There are 3 × 109 base pairs in the human genome and it costs three US dollars to identify each base. Thus, the entire project will cost about 9 billion dollars. To collect the known sequences, about 3300 books of 1000 pages will be required, if 10000 words are written on each page. It has been estimated that this project will take 13 years to complete.
If thousands of scientists from many countries work on it together, then its first process will take 10 years to complete. High-quality statistical tools will be required for the collection, completion, and analysis of such a large amount of data. Therefore, due to its large scale, this project is called a mega project.
