प्रश्न

Give reasons for the following:

It is necessary to specify the pressure and temperature of gas while stating its volume.

उत्तर

At a given temperature, the number of molecules of gas striking against the walls of the container per unit time per unit area is the same. Thus, gases exert the same pressure in all directions.

Because the volume of a gas changes remarkably with a change in temperature and pressure, it becomes necessary to choose a standard value of temperature pressure.

(a) Plot the following graphs

  1. P vs V
  2. P vs 1/V
  3. PV vs P

Interpret each graph in terms of the law.

(b) Assuming that the pressure values given above are correct, find the correct measurement of the volume.

22.4 litres of gas weighs 70 g at STP. Calculate the weight of the gas if it occupies a volume of 20 litres at 27°C and 700 mmHg of pressure.

50 cm3 of hydrogen is collected over water at 17°C and 750 mmHg pressure. Calculate the volume of a dry gas at STP. The water vapour pressure at 17°C is 14 mmHg.

Calculate the volume of a gas ‘A’ at s.t.p., if at 37°C and 775 mm of mercury pressure, it occupies a volume of `9 1/2` litres.

Calculate the following:

A gas ‘X’ is collected over water at 17°C and 750 mm. pressure. If the volume of the gas collected is 50 cc., calculate the volume of the dry gas at s.t.p. [at 17°C the vapour pressure is 14 mm.]

Assuming temperature remaining constant calculate the pressure of the gas in the following:

The pressure of a gas having volume 380 lits. originally occupying 800 cm3 at 76 cm. pressure.

Assuming temperature remaining constant calculate the pressure of the gas in the following:

The pressure of a gas having volume 1800 ml. originally occupying 300 ml. at 6 atms. pressure.

Assuming temperature remaining constant calculate the pressure of the gas in the following:

The pressure of a gas having volume 1500 cm3 originally occupying 750 cc. at 5 ats. pressure.
