Solve the following pair of equations:

`x/a + y/b = a + b, x/a^2 + y/b^2 = 2, a, b ≠ 0`

Given pair of linear equations is

`x/a + y/b` = a + b   .....(i)

And `x/a^2 + y/b^2` = 2, a, b ≠ 0   ......(ii)

On multiplying equation (i) by `1/a` and then subtracting from equation (ii), we get

     `x/a^2 + y/b^2 = 2`

     `x/a^2 + y/(ab) = 1 + b/a`

     –          –         –                        

`y(1/b^2 - 1/(ab)) = 2 - 1 - b/a`

 

⇒ `y((a - b)/(ab^2)) = 1 - b/a = ((a - b)/a)`

⇒ y = `(ab^2)/a`

⇒ y = b2

Now, put the value of y in equation (ii), we get

`x/a^2 + b^2/b^2` = 2

⇒ `x/a^2` = 2 – 1 = 1

⇒ x = a2

Hence, the required values of x and y are a2 and b2, respectively.

`square` × (2x + 3y = 4)      ∴ 4x + 6y = 8   …(iv)
Subtract (iv) from (iii),
`square` x = 25
∴ x = `square`


The number of solutions of 3x + y = 243 and 243x - y = 3 is ______.


Solve the following pair of equations:

`4x + 6/y = 15, 6x - 8/y = 14, y ≠ 0`


In a competitive examination, one mark is awarded for each correct answer while `1/2` mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Jayanti answered 120 questions and got 90 marks. How many questions did she answer correctly?


A shopkeeper sells a saree at 8% profit and a sweater at 10% discount, thereby, getting a sum Rs 1008. If she had sold the saree at 10% profit and the sweater at 8% discount, she would have got Rs 1028. Find the cost price of the saree and the list price (price before discount) of the sweater.
