Question
A 700 g dry fruit pack costs Rs. 72. It contains some cashew kernels and the rest as dry grapes. If cashew kernel costs Rs. 96 per kg and dry grapes cost Rs. 112 per kg, what were the quantities of the two dry fruits separately?
Solution
Let the quantity of cashew kernels be x kg in 700g `("that is ", (700)/(1000)"kg")`
and the quantity of dry grapes by `(700/1000 - x)`kg = (0.7 - x)kg
Since the cashew kernels cost Rs. 96 per kg,
so x kg of cashew kernels cost Rs. 96x
Since the dry grapes cost Rs. 112 per kg,
so (0.7 - x)kg cost Rs.112(0.7 - x)
As per the given condition,
112(0.7 - x) + 96x = 72
⇒ 78.4 - 112x + 96x = 72
⇒ -16x = -6.4
⇒ x = 0.4
0.7 - x
= 0.7 - 0.4
= 0.3kg
So, the quantity of cashew kernels is 0.54kg = 400g
and the quantity of dry grapes is 300g.
