Question

A game of numbers has cards marked with 11, 12, 13, ....., 40. A card is drawn at random. Find the probability that the number on the card drawn is a perfect square.

Sum

Solution

Total number of outcomes = 30

The perfect squares lying between 11 and 40 are 16, 25 and 36.

So the number of possible outcomes 3

∴ Probability that the number on the card drawn is a perfect square

= `"Number of possible outcomes"/"Total number of outcomes"`

= `3/30`

= `1/10`
