Question

A pupil determines the velocity of sound as 320 ms−1. If the actual velocity of sound is 332 ms−1, calculate the percentage error.

Numerical

Solution

Velocity of sound determined by pupil = V1 = 320 ms−1
Actual value of velocity of sound = V2 = 332 ms−1
Absolute error = V2 – V1 = 332 – 320 = 12 ms−1

Percentage error = `"Absolute error"/"Actual value"xx100`

= `12/332xx100`

= 3.61%
