Question
Arun bought a pair of skates at a sale where the discount given was 20%. If the amount he pays is Rs 1,600, find the marked price.
Solution 1
Let the marked price be x.
Discount Percent = `"Discount"/"Marked Price"` × 100
20 = `"Discount"/x` × 100
Discount = `20/100 xx x = 1/5 x`
Also
Discount = Marked price − Sale price
`1/5` x = x - Rs 1600
x - `1/5` x = Rs 1600
`4/5` x = Rs 1600
x = Rs `(1600 xx 5/4)` = Rs 2000
Thus, the marked price was Rs 2000.
Solution 2
Given selling price = Rs 1600
Discount = 20%
Let marked price = x
x − `(20x)/100` = 1600
`(100x−20x)/100` = 1600
or 80x = 160000
x = `160000/80`
or x = 2000
Hence the marked price = Rs 2000.
