Question

Draw the possible resonance structures for \[\ce{CH3 - \overset{\bullet\bullet}{\underset{\bullet\bullet}{O}} - \overset{+}{C}H2}\] and predict which of the structures is more stable. Give reason for your answer.

Short Note

Solution

The resonating structures can be drawn as-

\[\ce{CH3 - \overset{+}{\underset{\bullet\bullet}{O}} = CH2}\]
(I) (II)

In structure I, CH2 group has the positive charge which means octet is not completed, but in structure II, both the carbon atoms and oxygen atom have complete octet hence, more stable.
