Questions
Explain how the element sodium is monovalent.
Explain the monovalency of the element sodium.
Short Note
Solution
“The number of electrons that an atom of an element gives away or takes up while forming an ionic bond is called the valency of that element.” Sodium has an electrical configuration of 2,8,1. Na's outermost orbit has only one electron. A sodium ion is generated when a sodium atom gives one electron to an atom of another element. As a result, sodium has a valency of one, making it monovalent. After the electrons have been exchanged, the electronic arrangement of the resultant ions is an octet.
