The Consumer Protection Act enlists six rights for a consumer. They are:-
- Right to Safety:- this act emphasizes mainly on quality of the products that need to be bought by the consumer which safeguards the consumer against the goods and services that are hazardous to his/her life, health, and property.
- Right to be Informed:- here the consumer has the right to know about the detailed description of his products such as manufacturing date, quantity, price, ingredients, weight, etc., of goods and services.
- Right to Choose:- Right to Choose gives the consumer a choice to choose from a variety of goods and services available at different prices from which a consumer can buy the most suitable one.
- Right to be Heard:- In case of any complaints or dissatisfaction regarding a product needs to be dealt with by a business firm. A consumer has the right to file a complaint and a complaint receiving cell needs to be established.
- Right to Seek Redressal:- Here a consumer has the right to seek compensation in case of any exploitation such as a defect in the product or deuteriation in the quality of the product.
- Right to Consumer Education:- A consumer has the right to be educated regarding his rights of the product and available remedies in case of exploitation.
The responsibilities of consumers are as follows:-
- To be aware:- Consumers should be aware of their rights while buying a product.
- To be active:- Consumers should be careful while purchasing a product for its quality and certification.
- To protect the environment:- Consumers should be careful with buying the products regarding its environmental safety and should involve in its safe disposal methods without harming the environment.
- To read labels:- Consumer should buy standardized goods by seeing the label on a product with respect to their information regarding its price, weight, manufacturing, and expiry date.
- To ensure honest transactions:- Consumers should buy the product in a legal way and avoid illegal ways such as black marketing and ask for cash memos on purchase.
- To ensure safety:- A consumer should carefully read the instructions provided by the business firm on the product to ensure its safety before use.

Sameeksha is a Class-XII student having Business Studies as one of her subjects. After studying ‘Consumer Protection’ as one of the chapters in Business Studies, she tried to apply the acquired knowledge while purchasing and using the goods. She is very fond of cooking and always tries new recipies. This time she wants to purchase a ‘Bread Maker to prepare homemade bread. She checked online about the various brands of ‘Bread Maker available in the market and compared their price, so that an intelligent and wise choice can be made. Then she went to a nearby market to buy it. Being an informed consumer she looked for the Standardization Mark, negotiated the price printed on the label, checked the date of manufacturing and asked for guarantee or warranty of the product. After satisfying with all the concerned information she purchased the ‘Bread Maker' and as a responsible consumer asked for the cash-memo. After coming back home she opened the packaging of the ‘Bread Maker' and found an instruction booklet inside. She carefully read all the instructions and operated the Bread Maker step-by-step and succeeded in making nice ‘Atta Bread” for her family.
