Question

Explain the term oxidation in term of addition and removal of oxygen/hydrogen with a suitable example.

Chemical Equations/Structures

Solution

Addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen is called oxidation.

\[\ce{Carbon + Oxygen->Carbon dioxide}\]

\[\ce{C + O2->CO2}\]

Here carbon is oxidised to \[\ce{CO2}\]

\[\ce{H2S + Cl2->2HCl + S}\]

Here `"H"_2"S"` is oxidised to sulphur as removal of `"H"_2` takes place.
