Factorise the following, using the identity a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2

a2x2 + 2ax + 1

Solution

We have,

a2x2 + 2ax + 1

= (ax)2 + 2 · ax · 1 + (1)2

= (ax + 1)2

= (ax + 1)(ax + 1)
