Factorise the following, using the identity a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2

x2 + 6x + 9

Sum

Solution

We have,

x2 + 6x + 9 = x2 + 2 · 3 · x + 32

= (x + 3)2   ...[∵ a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2]

= (x + 3)(x + 3)
