Question

Find the mean wage of a worker from the following data:

Wages (In ₹) 1400 1450 1500 1550 1600 1650 1700
Number of workers 15 20 18 27 15 3 2
Sum

Solution

Let the assumed mean be A = 1550. Thus

Wages (In ₹) `x_i` Number of workers `(f_i)` `d_i = x_i - 1550` `f_i d_i`
1400 15 -150 -2250
1450 20 -100 -2000
1500 18 -50 -900
A = 1550 27 0 0
1600 15 50 750
1650 3 100 300
1700 2 150 300
  `sumf_i` = 100   `sumf_i d_i = -3800`

∴ Mean Wages = `"A" + (sumf_i d_i)/(sumf_i)`
= `(1,550 - (3,800)/100)`
= 1,550 - 38
= ₹1,512.
