Question

For the equation given below, find the slope and the y-intercept:
x + 3y + 5 = 0

Sum

Solution

Equation of any straight line in the form y = mx + c, where slope = m(co-efficient of x) and y-intercept = c(constant term)
x + 3y + 5 = 0

x + 3y + 5 = 0

3y = - x - 5

y = `(- x - 5)/(3)`

y = `(-1)/(3) x + (-5/3)`

Therefore,
slope = co-efficient of x = `-(1)/(3)`

y-intercept = constant term = `-(5)/(3)`.
