Question
How many moles of ethane is required to produce 44 g of \[\ce{CO2_{(g)}}\] after combustion.
Numerical
Solution
Balanced equation for the combustion of ethane
\[\ce{C2H6 + 7/2O2 -> 2CO2 + 3H2O}\]
\[\ce{2C2H6 + 7O2 -> 4CO2 + 6H2O}\]
To produce 4 moles of CO2, 2 moles of ethane is required
∴ To produce 1 mole (44 g) of CO2 required
Number of moles of ethane = `(2 "mol ethane")/(4 "mol CO"_2) xx 1 "mol CO"_2`
= `1/2` mole of ethane
= 0.5 mole of ethane
