Find the squares of the following number using the identity (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
1001
Solution
On decomposing:
1001 = 1000 + 1
Here, a = 1000 and b = 1
Using the identity (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2:
10012 = (1000 + 1)2 = 10002 + 2(1000)(1) + 12 = 1000000 + 2000 + 1 = 1002001
