Question

If P = − 12x2 – 10xy + 5y2, Q = 7x2 + 6xy + 2y2, and R = 5x2 + 2xy + 4y2 ; find P – Q

Sum

Solution

P = − 12x2 – 10xy + 5y2
Q = 7x2 + 6xy + 2y2
R = 5x2 + 2xy + 4y2

P − Q = (− 12x2 − 10xy + 5y2) − (7x2 + 6xy + 2y2)

= − 12x2 − 10xy + 5y2 − 7x2 − 6xy − 2y2

= − 12x2 − 7x2 − 10xy − 6xy + 5y2 − 2y2

= − 19x2 − 16xy + 3y2
