In a science exhibition demonstrate the various methods of detecting food adulteration.

  1. Adulteration in Milk (Water Adulteration)
    1. Materials Needed: Dropper, Glass of milk and Transparent glass plate
    2. Method: Put a drop of milk on the glass plate and tilt it.
    3. Observation: Pure milk leaves a white trail. Milk adulterated with water runs quickly without leaving a trail.
  2. Adulteration in Salt (Chalk Powder)
    1. Materials Needed: A small amount of salt, Water and Transparent glass
    2. Method: Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water. Let it settle for a few minutes.
    3. Observation: If chalk powder is present, it will settle at the bottom
  3. Adulteration in Sugar (Washing Soda)
    1. Materials Needed: Sugar, Water and Lime juice or lemon
    2. Method: Dissolve a small amount of sugar in water. Add a few drops of lime juice.
    3. Observation: If it produces bubbles, washing soda is present.
  4. Adulteration in Turmeric Powder (Yellow Dye)
    1. Materials Needed: Turmeric powder, Warm water and Test tube
    2. Method: Mix a pinch of turmeric in warm water.
    3. Observation: Pure turmeric will not leave a yellow streak. If yellow dye is present, it will stain the container.
  5. Adulteration in Tea Leaves (Iron Fillings)
    1. Materials Needed: Tea leaves and Magnet
    2. Method: Spread tea leaves on a white paper and move a magnet over them.
    3. Observation: Iron fillings will stick to the magnet if present.
