Question

In a single throw of a pair of different dice, what is the probability of getting a total of 9 or 11?

Solution

Total number of outcomes on throwing a pair of dice = 6 × 6 = 36

Let F be the event of getting a total of 9 or 11.

∴ Favourable outcomes = {(3, 6), (4, 5), (5, 4), (6, 3), (5, 6), (6, 5)}.

Number of favourable outcomes = 6

Now,

`P(F)=6/36=1/6`

Thus, the probability of getting a total of 9 or 11 is `1/6`
