Question
List the two types of reproduction. Which one of the two is responsible for bringing in more variations in its progeny and how?
Solution
Reproductive methods in all organisms can be categorised into two types: Asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Out of these two, sexual reproduction brings in more variations in organisms. It is so because in sexual reproduction, fusion of male and female gametes from two different organisms (or parents) occur. Since the fusing gametes come from two different individuals, the offsprings exhibit more diversity of characters. Also, during the gamete formation, meiosis occurs, which brings new combination of genes. Both these factors lead to more variations in the progeny.
