Question
Medicine is packed in boxes, each weighing 4 kg 500 g. How many such boxes can be loaded in a van which cannot carry beyond 800 kg?
Solution 1
Weight of each box = 4 kg 500 g = 4500 g
Van can carry = 800 kg = 800,000 g
Total boxes that can be transported = 800,000 ÷ 4500 = 177.78
Weight of 177 filled boxes = 177 × 4500 = 796500 g
Weight of empty boxes = 800,000 − 796,500 = 3,500 g
The van can accommodate 177 filled boxes and one 3 kg 500 g box.
Solution 2
The weight of one box = 4kg 500g
4 × 1000g + 500g = 4500g
Maximum load can be loaded in a van
= 800kg = 800 × 1000g = 800000 g
Number of boxes = 800000 ÷ 4500
177
