What are the duties of consumers?
Solution
An alert consumer is one who not only knows about his rights but also understands his duties as a consumer. Such consumers always remains safe. In order to secure the rights, consumers have to fulfil the following duties:
- While purchasing the goods, the consumer should look at the quality of the product as well as the guarantee or warrantee period. Consumers should preferably purchase standardised products that contain the seal of ISi or Agmark.
- The consumer should ask for a cash memo and warranty card.
- Consumers must be aware of their rights and duties.
- Consumers should form consumer awareness organisations, which can be given representation in various committees formed by the government and other bodies in matters relating to the consumers.
- Consumers must make complaints for their genuine grievances. They should know the method by which to proceed when cheated.

CASE STUDY The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) under the Department of Consumer Affairs has notified 'Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022' with an objective to curb misleading advertisements and protect consumers, who may be exploited or affected by such advertisements. Keeping in view the sensitiveness and vulnerability of children and severe impact advertisements make on the younger minds, several preemptive provisions have been laid down on advertisements targetiµg children. Guidelines say that advertisements targeting children shall not J~ature any personalities from the field of sports, music or cinema and products which under any law require a health warning for such advertisement or cannot be purchased·by children.
