Long Answer

Solution

Alligators v/s Crocodiles

The given table provides the distinguishing features between alligators and Crocodiles. While alligators have a U-shaped round snout, Crocodiles are found to have a V-shaped snout. The next difference is based on the habitat of these reptiles. While alligators are found only in fresh water, Crocodiles live in both fresh and saline waters. Alligators have wide jaws, wherein the upper jaw is wider than the lower jaw. As a result, only the teeth in the upper jaw are visible, when its mouth is closed. In Crocodiles however, both the jaws are relatively narrow and of the same size. Hence, both the teeth are visible when the mouth is closed. While Crocodiles have salt glands that are functional, alligators lack salt glands. The final difference between the two is based on the presence and location of sensory pits. In case of alligators, sensory pits are found on scales only near the jaw, whereas, in Crocodiles, these are found in every scale of its body.

The brief, bright streaks of light in the night sky are known as meteors. Those fall all the way to the ground are called meteorites. Meteorites can be divided into three broad categories: iron, stony – iron and stony.

Iron meteorites are mostly made of metals nickel and iron. They are not very common. Nearly 50,000 years ago, an iron meteorite, Canyon Diablo, which created a crater a nearly a mile wide and 6 feet deep, known as Meteor Crater, was found in Arizona.

Stony – iron meteorites rarely land on our planet. They are made of iron – nickel alloy mixed with non – metallic matter similar to the outer layers of the earth. Such a meteorite weighing more than one and a half tons was found in Huckitta, Australia in 1924.

There are three sub – types of stony meteorites. The first is the chondrites which make up 86 percent of meteorites.
Carbonaceous chondrites are another rare type of stony meteorites. The most famous of these fell in Murchison, Australia in 1969. It contains evidence that life on earth did not begin here. The last type, the anchondrites are also rare. Scientists say that such matter was once part of Mars and our own moon.

Two common types of oils are animal oil and vegetable oil.
Some of the commonest
sources of animal oils are from the livers of the cod and halibut, two kinds of fish. These oils are very nourishing. They are a great source of vitamins, and hence are recommended for under nourished children. We get oil from other creatures as well, but it is the whale that yields the most. The whale has a thick coating of fat called blubber which protects it from the extreme cold of the Arctic seas. Whales are often hunted for this oil. To make this oil fit for human consumption blubber is stripped off from a dead whale and boiled, most often on board the ship.
egetable oils are extracted from different plant parts such as seeds, nuts and the flesh of fruits. They are widely used in cooking. From very ancient times they have been used in households for various reasons. The oils of certain flowers are extracted to make perfumes. Vegetable oils such as castor oil are used as medicine and as lubricants. In recent times, there have been debates on using waste vegetable oils as fuel.

Garbage disposal has become a great problem in urban areas. A lot of garbage is being collected from every household. Some cities have come up with innovative ideas to tackle this problem. First of all, the garbage in trucks is segregated into organic waste from recyclable waste. Then it is put in separate containers.
Earthworm culture is added to this organic waste. After a few weeks the conversion process is complete and what we can get is vermicompost which is a very good quality compost that can be mixed with soil and used for better yields.

While preparing to plant trees in a residential colony, highways or anywhere, one should consider three factors for taking a decision. What kind of (species) trees, where to plant and what kind of soil. One should consider the qualities of a tree such as a pattern of branching and its height.
If it is a school, you need shade-giving trees of moderate height so that children can play under them and not be hurt when they climb on them.
In residential colonies, trees with thick branches, like Eucalyptus or Ashoka should be chosen to control pollution and trap dust. Similarly, the nature of the soil too should be considered.
If you are planting trees by the road side, it withstands the topical monsoon and provides shade in summer.
On highways, the well-known choice would be the native trees like Tamarind or Peepal. They do not need much care. Birds and animals interact more easily with native trees than the exotic ones. Villagers too consider such native trees to be sacred as the abode of gods.

Turtles and tortoises are closely related. They are both reptiles from the same family (Testudines or Chelonian). The main difference between the two is that turtle is the name given to water-dwellers and tortoise is the name given to land-dwellers. They are easily identified by the presence of a shell, from which their head and limbs protrude.

Turtles are found in Africa and America. Its shell is lighter and more streamlined than that of a tortoise. To enable swimming, it has webbed feet with long claws. Turtles are omnivores, eating both vegetation and meat. Their lifespan is shorter than that of the tortoise with an average of 20-40 years and a maximum of 86 years.

Tortoises are found mainly in Asia and Africa, but also in America. It has a rounder, bumpier, heavier shell than a turtle. Its bent legs are short and sturdy. Man and forest live in a close relationship. The forest fulfils most of man's needs. He collects resin, cane, timber, food and fruits from forests. The fallen branch gives him firewood. Trees purify the polluted air. But men have been unkind towards the forest for a few years. People must be made aware of the value of forests. Planting campaigns should be launched. The government of the world should enforce severe laws against wrongdoers. Vast areas of forest lands should be declared nature reserves. Scientists and engineers should be encouraged to find substitutes for wood like bamboo, hemp, etc.
