Question

Observe the globe in your school. Think about the following question and then discuss it.

What labels do these lines have? What similarities and differences do you see in the labels?

Activity

Solution

  1. Labels for Horizontal Lines: These are called latitudes (e.g., Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn).
  2. Labels for Vertical Lines: These are called longitudes (e.g., Prime Meridian, International Date Line).

Similarities:

  • Both are imaginary lines used for navigation and to locate places on the Earth.
  • Both are measured in degrees.

Differences:

  • Latitudes run parallel to each other, whereas longitudes converge at the poles.
  • Latitudes measure north-south positions, while longitudes measure east-west positions.
