On January 17, 2023, the international news media agency Reuters reported that adverse weather has hit the Indian cane crop, which will reduce the total sugar output this year. The news report mentioned excessive rainfall and cloudy weather in September and October as a reason for the expected drop in sugar output.
Based on this information, examine how such a climatic condition can adversely affect the sugarcane crop.
Solution
Due to tropical cyclones which lead to heavy rainfall, waterlogging takes place leading to diluted sucrose in the cane and damaging of sugarcane crop.
