Question
Put the given fraction in ascending order by making denominator equal:
`5/7, 3/8, 9/14 "and" 20/21`
Solution
`5/7, 3/8, 9/14 "and" 20/21`
L.C.M. of denominators 7, 8, 14 and 21 = 168
`therefore 5/7 = (5 xx 24)/(7 xx 24) = 120/168`
`3/8 = (3 xx 21)/(8 xx 21) = 63/168`
`9/14 = (9 xx 12)/(14 xx 12) = 108/168`
`20/21 = (20 xx 8)/(21 xx 8) = 160/168`
It is clear from the above that
`63/168 < 108/168 < 120/168 < 160/168`
or `3/8 < 9/14 < 5/7 < 20/21`
Hence, `3/8, 9/14, 5/7 "and" 20/21` are in ascending order.
