Question
Arrange the given fraction in descending order by making numerator equal:
`5/6, 4/15, 8/9 "and" 1/3`
Solution
`5/6, 4/15, 8/9 "and" 1/3`
L.C.M. of numerators 5, 4, 8 and 1 = 40
`therefore 5/6 = (5 xx 8)/(6 xx 8) = 40/48`
`4/15 = (4 xx 10)/(15 xx 10) = 40/150`
`8/9 = (8 xx 5)/(9 xx 5) = 40/45`
`1/3 = (1 xx 40)/(3 xx 40) = 40/120`
From above we see that
`40/45 > 40/48 > 40/120 > 40/150`
∴ `8/9 > 5/6 > 1/3 > 4/15`
Hence, `8/9, 5/6, 1/3, 4/15` are in descending order.
