Question

Solve each of the following systems of equations by the method of cross-multiplication

x+yxy=2

x-yxy=6

Solution

The given system of equations is

x+yxy=2

xxy+yxy=2

1y+1x=2

1x+1y=2 ............(i)

And

x-yxy=6

xxy-yxy=6

1y-1x=6

1x-1y=6   ......(ii)

Taking u=1xandv=1y we get

u+v=2u+v-2=0 ....(iii)

And u - v = -6 => u - v+ 6 = 0 ........(iv)

Here

a1=1,b1=1,c1=-2

a2=1,b2=-1,c2=6

By cross multiplication

u1×6-(-2)×(-1)=v1×6-(-2)×1=11×(-1)-1×1

u6-2=-v6+2=1-1-1

u4=-v8=1-2

Now, u4=1-2

u=4-2=-2

And -v8=1-2

-v =8-2=-4

-v=-4

=> v = 4

Now x=1u=-12,y=1v=14

Hence x=-12,y=14is the solution of the given system of equations.
