Question

Solve the following:

`3x - (x - 2)/3 = 4 - (x - 1)/4`

Sum

Solution

Given, `3x - (x - 2)/3 = 4 - (x - 1)/4`

⇒ `(9x - (x - 2))/3 = (16 - (x - 1))/4`

⇒ 4(9x – x + 2) = 3(16 – x + 1)  ...[By cross-multiplication]

⇒ 4(8x + 2) = 3(– x + 17)

⇒ 32x + 8 = – 3x + 51

⇒ 32x + 3x = 51 – 8  ...[Transposing – 3x to LHS and 8 to RHS]

⇒ 35x = 43

⇒ `(35x)/35 = 43/35`   ...[Dividing both sides by 35]

∴ `x = 43/35`
