Question

Solve the following equation and verify the answer:

5(x-1) +2(x+3) + 6 = 0

Sum

Solution

5(x-1) +2(x+3) + 6 = 0
⇒ 5x -5 +2x +6 +6 = 0 (Expanding within the brackets)
⇒ 7x +7 = 0
⇒ x +1 = 0 (Dividing by 7)
⇒ x = -1

Verification:
Putting x = -1 in the L.H.S.:
L.H.S.: 5(-1 -1) + 2(-1 + 3) + 6
= 5(-2) + 2(2) + 6
= -10 + 4 + 6 = 0 = R.H.S.

Hence, verified.
