Question

Solve the following equation for x and give, in the following case, your answer correct to 3 decimal places:

x2 – 16x + 6 = 0

Sum

Solution

x2 – 16x + 6 = 0

Here a = 1, b = – 16 and c = 6

∴ `x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`

= `(-(-16) ± sqrt((-16)^2 - 4(1)(6)))/(2(1))`

= `(16 ± sqrt232)/2`

= `(16 ± 15.231)/2`

`x = (16 + 15.231)/2` or `x = (16 - 15.231)/2`

∴ `x = (16 + 15.231)/2`

x = 15.616

∴ x = `(16 - 15.231)/2`

x = 0.384
