Question
Solve the following equation for x and give, in the following case, your answer correct to 3 decimal places:
2x2 + 11x + 4 = 0
Solution
2x2 + 11x + 4 = 0
Here a = 2, b = 11 and c = 4
∴ `x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`
= `(-(11) +- sqrt((11)^2 - 4(2)(4)))/(2(2))`
= `(-11 +- sqrt89)/4`
= `(-11 +- 9.434)/4`
= `(-11 + 9.434)/4` and `(-11-9.434)/4`
= – 0.392 and – 5.108
