Question

Solve the following simultaneous equation graphically.

2x + 3y = 12 ; x – y = 1

Graph

Solution

2x + 3y = 12

∴ 3y = 12 - 2x

∴ y = `(12 - 2x)/3`

x 0 6 3
y 4 0 2
(x, y) (0, 4)  (6, 0) (3, 2)

x – y = 1

∴ y = x - 1

x 0 1 3
y -1 0 2
(x, y) (0, -1) (1, 0) (3, 2)

The solution of the given equations is the point of intersection of the two line i.e (3, 2).
