Question
State a reason for the following:
La(OH)3 is more basic than Lu(OH)3.
Solution
Lanthanide contraction reduces the size of lanthanide ions from La3+ to Lu3+, increasing the covalent character of hydroxides and decreasing basic strength. La(OH)3 is most basic and Lu(OH)3 is least basic.
