State any four organisational barriers of communication.
Solution 1
Organizational barriers:
- If organizational policy either explicit or implicit is not supportive to free flow of communication it may hamper effectiveness of communications.
- Rigid rules and regulations, cumbersome procedures may be a hurdle to communication, as communications through prescribed channels may result in delays.
- Status of superior may create psychological distance between him and his subordinates.
- Complexity in the organization caused by the number of managerial levels may delay and distort the communication as the number of filtering points is more.
- If facilities like frequent meetings, suggestion box, and complaint box, social and cultural gathering, transparency in operations, etc, for smooth, clear and timely communications are not provided, communications may be hampered.
Solution 2
Organisational barriers refer to barriers in effective communication which arise in formal organisations because of factors such as authority and hierarchical relationships.
Some organisational barriers include
- Organisational Policy: The organisational policy can be either explicit or implicit and may or may not permit easy flow of information. This hampers the effectiveness of communication. Example: A highly centralised organisation never encourages free communication.
- Rules and Regulations: Rigid and stringent rules and procedures of an organisation may change into a hurdle in effective communication. Similarly, communicating through prescribed channels of communication may result in delayed information
- Status: The status differences sometimes lead to psychological differences between the superior and his/her subordinates. A status-conscious man never allows his/her subordinates to express themselves freely.
- Complexity in organisational structure under Barriers to Communication: The hierarchical administrative levels established by an organization have their own benefits, however when the organizational structure is complex, the flow of information takes time and the message may be corrupted in between.
- Organisational facilities: In a large-scale operation, free flow of information is possible by facilitating social get-togethers or meetings and placing a complaint box. So, delay in action and movement of information occur only in the absence of such facilities.
