Question

State the purpose of soft iron core used in making an electromagnet.

Short Note

Solution

On placing a soft iron rod in a solenoid and passing a current, the magnetism of the solenoid is increased by a thousandfold. When the solenoid current is switched off, the magnetism is effectively switched off since the soft iron core has a low retentivity.
