Question

The government seeing the necessity of computers in daily life reduced sales tax on it by 8%. As a result, computers are now cheaper by Rs 2,240. Find the marked price of the computers.

Sum

Solution

The decrease in price of the oomputers is only because of the decrease in amount of sales tax.

Let marked price be x

And decrease amount of sales tax is

= (decrease in rate of sales tax) x Price/ 100

This amount is given as Rs 2,240.

Also it is given

Decrease in rate of sales tax = 8 %

Therefore:

Rs 2240 = `x xx 8/100`

Rs 2240 = `(2 x)/25`

x = Rs `(2240 xx 25)/2` = Rs 28000

Thus marked price of the oomputer is Rs. 28,000
