Question
Two-third of a number is greater than one-third of the number by 3. Find the number.
Solution
Let the number x.
Then, two-third of this number = `2/3x` and one-third of this number = `1/3x`.
According to the question,
`2/3 x = 1/3 x + 3`
⇒ `2/3x - 1/3 x` = 3
⇒ `(2x - x)/3` = 3 ......[Taking LCM on LHS]
⇒ `x/3` = 3
⇒ `x/3 xx 3` = 3 × 3 ......[Multiplying both sides by 3]
⇒ x = 9
Hence, the required number is 9.
