Question
In a class of 60 students, the number of girls is one-third the number of boys. Find the number of girls and boys in the class.
Solution
As per the given information in the question, the total number of students in the class = 60.
Let x be the number of boys in the class.
Then, the number of girls in the class = `x/3`
According to the question,
`x + x/3` = 60
⇒ `(3x + x)/3` = 60
⇒ `(4x)/3` = 60
⇒ 4x = 60 × 3
⇒ 4x = 180
⇒ x = `180/4` = 45
Hence, the number of boys in the class is 45 and the number of girls in the class is `45/3` i.e.15.
